TOUR ITINERARY:
DAY 1 SUNDAY: ARRIVE IN BROKEN HILL
On arrival in Broken Hill, you will be met by your host and escorted to your accommodation. Silverton Ghost Town and Sunset Sculptures Symposium. This morning you visit Australia’s liveliest ghost town and setting for many movies. See craft centres, galleries and museums, and the historical Silverton Hotel. In the afternoon you will visit the Sculpture Symposium at sunset.
DAY 2 MONDAY: WETLANDS CRUISE, MENINDEE & KINCHEGA NATIONAL PARK.
Enjoy a leisurely tour around the Menindee Lakes scheme. Travel to Menindee and on to Kinchega National Park. Relax on a cruise through the wetlands aboard the “River Lady”.
DAY 3 TUESDAY: BROKEN HILL to TIBOOBURRA
Today head north towards the remote “corner country”. Hear tales and legends of this great land, and gain your first experience of the Outback – our special heritage. After lunch, continue towards the tiny town of Milparinka and historic Depot Glen. Continue to Tibooburra, the most remote town in NSW for dinner and overnight at a great Aussie bush hotel, the “two storey” Tibooburra Hotel. After dinner spend some time stargazing.
DAY 4 WEDNESDAY: STURT NATIONAL PARK & CAMERON CORNER
After breakfast head towards the dingo fence. Our route through spectacular red sandhill country takes us to Cameron Corner where South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales meet, then continue through magnificent Sturt National Park. Take the opportunity and time to learn about a very special part of the Australian bush; capture the spirit of “corner country”. Kangaroos, emus and birdlife by the hundreds. Shoot as much as you like …….. with your camera! Day ends again at Tibooburra.
DAY 5 THURSDAY: WILDERNESS to WHITE CLIFFS
From Tibooburra head southeast to the opal fields of White Cliffs, lunching en route at one of the many beautiful dry creeks which cross the countryside. White Cliffs is unique – a tiny community which lives underground. The thousands of shafts drilled by optimistic miners create an eerie, lunar landscape. Home for the night is the aptly-named Underground Motel. After dinner, evening at leisure. Perhaps spend some time star-gazing: the Outback night skies are breathtakingly clear and pollution-free!
DAY 6 FRIDAY: WHITE CLIFFS-MUTAWINTJI NATIONAL PARK-BROKEN HILL
Explore White Cliffs - maybe fossick for your own bit of opal. Travel to beautiful Mutawintji National Park - a place of dramatic scenery, prolific birdlife, crystal clear rockpools and ancient Aboriginal art. Your Tour Guide is licensed to escort you into the restricted Historic Site to view the Hand Stencils and Rock Engravings. Mutawintji is a highlight to be savoured. Lunch in the National Park before returning to town late afternoon. Transfer to post-tour accommodation, or departure point for onward travel.
